Standard Perfect Weight For Scuba Diving

Carrying too much weight when Scuba-diving is a common mistake in the dive community. It results in poor buoyancy control and increases air consumption. Here is how you find the correct weights you need on your weight belt or integrated in your BCD.

Get into your scuba gear and enter the water with your estimated weight requirement. Ensure your BCD is inflated prior to enter the water.

Put your regulator into your mouth at the surface and deflate your BCD while holding a normal Breath. Start deflating your BCD but be ready to kick and inflate immediately if you start sinking fast. That indicates that you have got too much weight.

Ideally the waterline should be at eye level with an empty BCD while holding a normal breath. If not you need to subtract or add some weight until you do that.

Finally just exhale and you should slowly descend if you are proper weighted.

If you do the buoyancy check at the surface at the beginning of your dive you will need to ad 1.5 - 2 Kg /3-5 lbs when using a normal 12 Liter/3000cft tank. Remember that air has also weight and your tank will get lighter during the dive.

If you have the time, try to make this buoyancy check ahead of diving or during a trainings dive in confined water using an almost empty tank. If there is no time for that repeat the steps above at the end of your dive when your air pressure of you cylinder is below 50bar/750psi.

Do this buoyancy check whenever you use new or unfamiliar equipment, did not dive for a while or changing from fresh-water to seawater.
