Silliman University - Dumaguete - Founders Day Silliman University (formerly Silliman Institute), the first Protestant school in the country and the oldest American-established university in Asia, was founded on August 28, 1901.
Located in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Silliman University or SU holds the distinction of being one of the private higher education institutions in the country that have been granted autonomy by the Commission on Higher Education.
Notable alumni of Silliman University include the late Carlos P. Garcia, 8th President of the Philippines; Edith L. Tiempo, National Artist for Literature; Eddie S. Romero, National Artist for Cinema and Broadcast Arts (2003); and current Finance Secretary Margarito Teves.
With the presence of Silliman University and other local universities, Dumaguete is considered as "the center of learning in the South" or a "University Town."
